Notes:
Accessibility is Fundamental to Usability
If someone can't access your Web site, they can't use it.
Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA)
The ADA mandates equal access to facilities and services, regardless of handicap or disability, While the ADA has had a massive impact on many industries, it does not apply to the Web. Several Federal agencies include accessible techniques in their "Best Practices" guidelines for Web site design, and many believe that Federally-mandated accessibility requirements for Web sites are only a matter of time
Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI)
The W3C (Word Wide Web Consortium, the arbiter of all Web standards) has developed Page Authoring Guidelines (updated 7/20/98). Links to these Guidelines are in the Resources Section, and the major points of the guidelines will be convered in this presentation. If a site complies with the WAI in all particulars, it is eligible to display an accessibility icon.
